EMI – shielded o rings and seals: What are they?

Optimised for diverse electronic applications, EMI O-rings offer the most robust sealing solution for digital devices while minimising disruptions to frequency, preventing static interference.

These shielded EMI-RFI O-rings are versatile and can be vital in specific applications across various industries.

Helping to provide a shield against electromagnetic interference, this post examines this particular type of sealing solution in more detail, including its applications, the types of o-rings it would be used for, and some of its main benefits.

EMI – shielded o rings and seals explained

EMI O-rings explained

Electromagnetic interference in electrical devices has increased significantly in recent years as technology continues to advance, develop, and increase.

These varying levels of interference can affect a device’s performance, computing data and, in more serious cases, can lead to complete system failures.

This is where EMI O-rings come in.

Shielded seals, also known as EMI O-rings, are multi-functional specialist seals that support applications with EMI suppression.

They are widely used to protect internal components and deliver a reliable seal, all while maintaining performance across the application.

EMI o-rings are ideal for applications involving sensitive electronic equipment.

Designed to provide a conductive interface and hermetic seal, when we look at what EMI

O-rings are, we look first at their makeup and composition.

Manufactured with conductive elastomers, EMI o-rings also consist of fillers such as silver, graphite, copper, nickel – (note: the material and filler you opt for will be dependent on the specific application for which the o ring is intended.)

The two most popular elastomer materials to choose from for EMI o rings include:

Silicone – able to resist deformation, silicone can withstand chemicals, ozone, ultraviolet radiation, water and fluids, and extreme temperatures. It is also extremely flexible, versatile, and durable as a material.

Fluorosilicone – can withstand water, ozone, UV light, wide temperature ranges, and is also resistant to fuels and solvents. It is a material that maintains its flexibility even in the harshest of environments.

Note: to find out more about one of our other most popular O-rings, check out our post on FFKM seals and gaskets.

What is an EMI O-ring

EMI gasket seals protect against unwanted disturbances and prevent disruption to the performance of electronic devices.

For example, static on the radio is a form of electromagnetic interference (EMI). Of course, no one wants this, not only is it detrimental for the consumer, but it also affects performance in critical applications that could result in serious consequences.

This makes these types of o-rings critical.

This type of seal serves a dual purpose, as we use it to create a robust pressure seal that helps keep moisture and contaminants out while also shielding internal components of the application from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference.

Bonded and sealed with conductive silicone adhesive, this type of o ring ultimately prevents radio wave penetration and EMI leakage.

EMI gaskets come in standard shapes, sizes, sealing levels, and durometers, or you also have the option and the flexibility to customise this type of seal (make sure to speak to SSP to find out more).

When choosing the right material for your EMI o ring, consider the following:

  • Temperature resistance
  • Fluid Exposure
  • Frequency of the interference
  • Operating environment
  • Chemical compatibility
  • Required shielding effectiveness

The o ring you opt for must meet all specifications and performance requirements.

Applications of EMI O-rings

As these o rings are filled with electrically conductive particles, they are applied to enclosure covers and doors as well as any vulnerable areas to prevent electromagnetic emissions from interfering with the electronic components within the product.

This type of seal is suitable for use in:

  • Telecommunications
  • Military systems
  • Medical instrumentation
  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • General consumer devices, i.e., smartphones, gaming consoles, etc
  • Industrial machinery

Benefits of conductive O-rings

  • Can achieve bulk resistivity values ie how much electrical current is flowing through the material
  • Versatile and adaptable to numerous applications, making them suitable across various industries
  • Weather resistant
  • Watertight and submersible
  • Can achieve a high-quality sealing solution
  • Shield against electromagnetic disturbances
  • Maintain a device’s high level of performance
