Everything To Know About Hypalon Gasket

Spiral wound gaskets come in many shapes, forms, and material types, making them suitable for a wide variety of applications and industry sectors.

One spiral wound gasket, in particular, is that of the Hypalon gasket.

A rubber gasket synthetic material that offers high quality and can be precision cut in a range of shapes and sizes, all customisable to your set specifications and requirements.

Working with the right gasket manufacturer and supplier, you can produce these types of gaskets quickly and accurately, and you can have confidence in the knowledge that they are perfectly formed.

In this post, we look at a Hypalon rubber gasket in more detail and discuss some of the advantages of opting for this type of gasket material.

Hypalon Gasket - Things you nee to know

What is a Hypalon gasket?

Intricately cut a Hypalon gasket sits between two surfaces to create a low-pressure seal.

Spiral wound gaskets are the perfect sealing solution to prevent gas and liquids from escaping applications and to prevent dust and debris from getting in.

The Hypalon gasket is most often used to fill the gaps between uneven surfaces due to its ability to absorb vibrations and ability to reduce friction between the parts.

The makeup of the Hypalon rubber gasket

Hypalon is part of the trademarked brand Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSPE), initially developed by DuPont.

Suitable for various industrial applications, the Hypalon gasket:

  • Has a shore hardness of 65 degrees
  • Is suitable for temperature ranges between -30 degrees Celsius and +140 degrees Celsius
  • Has a high tensile strength – with its minimum tensile strength sitting at 40 kg/cm2
  • Has a tear resistance of 180 kg/cm
  • Has a smooth plate finish as standard on both sides
  • Manufacturers are able to cut precise tolerances to suit a customer’s specific application requirements
  • Typically manufactured in continuous rolls, which are then cut and converted into bespoke rubber gaskets and specific shape, ensuring precision at all times.

Hypalon gaskets are most often found in:

  • Automotive hoses
  • Seals
  • Hydraulic sealing
  • Cable construction
  • Roofing systems
  • And more.

Making it suitable for:

  • Oil and gas industry
  • Chemical processing sector
  • Construction
  • Automotive
  • Aerospace.

Advantages of Hypalon gaskets

Some of the most notable benefits of Hypalon gaskets include:

  • Resistant to ultraviolet light
  • Abrasion resistant
  • It has high thermal stability, which means the gasket is less likely to degrade.
  • Weather resistant – in fact, the Hypalon gasket is one of the most weather-resistant elastomers you will find on the market.
  • It still performs to a high level in extreme temperatures
  • Resistant to chemicals and suitable to various chemical environments
  • Resistant to oils and solvents
  • Has good electrical insulation properties
  • It offers good dielectric strength
  • It has low moisture absorption
  • Resistant to ageing, making it suitable for exterior sealing applications
  • Has low flammability
  • Hypalon gaskets can maintain their properties and performance even in the harshest of environments.

It’s important to note some of the challenges with Hypalon gaskets, as well as the benefits.

The main challenge and downside of this type of gasket is that they are not suitable for use with aromatic hydrocarbons or ketones.
