Considered to be the biggest sector in the world in terms of dollar value, the oil and gas industry is a global powerhouse employing hundreds of thousands of workers worldwide as well as generating hundreds of billions of dollars globally each year.

In regions which house the major NOCs, these oil and gas companies are so vital they often contribute a significant amount towards national GDP.

The oil and gas industry can be broken down into three key areas;

Upstream

  • The upstream component involves the search for underwater and underground natural gas fields or crude oil fields and the drilling of exploration wells and established wells to recover oil and gas

Midstream

  • Midstream entails the transportation, storage and processing of oil and gas. Once resources are recovered it has to be transported to a refinery which is often in a completely different geographic region compared to the oil and gas reserves. Transportation can include anything from tanker ships to pipelines and trucking fleets.

Downstream

  • Downstream refers to the filtering of the raw materials obtained during the upstream phase. This means refining crude oil and purifying natural gas. The marketing and commercial distribution of these products to consumers and end users in a number of forms including natural gas, diesel oil, petrol, gasoline, lubricants, kerosene, jet fuel, asphalt, heating oil and LPG as well as a number of other types of petrochemicals

The largest volumes of products of the oil and gas industry are fuel oil and gasoline. Petroleum is the primary material for a multitude of chemical products including pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, solvents and plastics. Petroleum is therefore integral to many industries and is of critical importance to many nations as the foundation of their industries.

PETROCHEMICAL

Having ISO 9001:2015 S.S.P. supply a whole range of sealing and pipeline products to the world’s petrochemical industry. From spiral wound flange gaskets to compression packings and PTFE seals all products are manufactured and supplied to recognised international standards and specifications.

Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid found in rock formations. It consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights plus other organic compounds.

Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum. Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources such as corn, palm fruit or sugar cane

In the petrochemical industry the organic chemicals produced in the largest volumes, and referred to as the three primary petrochemicals are

  • Methanol
  • Olefins – ethylene, propylene and butadiene
  • Aromatics – benzene, toluene and Xylene

These three group products are precursors to a variety of chemical products including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, synthetic fragrances and plastics

The pharmaceutical industry discovers, develops, produces and markets drugs for use as medicines. Pharmaceutical companies may deal in generic or brand medications and medical devices and are subject to a variety of laws and regulations that govern the patenting, testing, safety, efficacy and marketing of such developed drugs.

The global pharmaceutical industry is set to reach over £1 trillion by 2020 and with rising pressure to develop drugs to meet ever increasing global demand, pharmaceutical companies continue to work tirelessly to bring the most innovative and cutting-edge treatments to patients.

Being a research driven industry over £100 billion is spent by pharmaceutical companies every year on research and development projects. Only 1 in every 5000 products screened are approved as new medicine and only 30% of approved and marketed drugs produce profits that cover their R & D costs. Approximately 40 new medicines are approved each year and the average cost of developing a single drug, from initial discovery to approval is estimated at more than £300 million. Most drugs fail to make it to market but still incur development costs. On average it takes more than 10 years to progress through ‘Phases’ from initial discovery to product approval.

PUMPS and VALVES

Pumps

A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action. Based on the type of pump the market can be categorized into two major groups according to the method they use to move the fluid

  • Centrifugal
  • Positive displacement

Global Pumps and Valves Market Overview

The increased exploration activities for oil and gashas the most prominent impact on the global market for pumps and valves. The growing need for the transportation and refining of oil and gas is also fuelling the demand for pumps and valves across the world and is projected to continue to drive this market over the forthcoming years.

Broadly, the global market for pumps and valves used in the oil and gas industry can be analysed on the basis of the type of pump, type of valve, application and the geography.

    Valves

A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidised solids or slurries) by opening, closing or partially obstructing various passageways.  Valves are technically valve fittings but are usually discussed as a separate category.  In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure.

Based on the type of Valve the market can be categorised into

    • Needle
    • Gate
    • Ball
    • Check

      Type of Pump

      • Centrifugal
      • Positive displacement

      Type of Valve

      • Needle
      • Gate
      • Ball

Water is our most valuable resource and it must be made available and affordable for everyone

The water industry provides good quality drinking water, sanitation and drainage services   every day to over 60 million consumers in the UK through 35 privately owned companies.

Drinking water is primarily obtained by purifying groundwater and surface water involving chemical treatment processes. The treatment required depends largely on the quality of the raw water and which substances need adding or removing.

The processes involved throughout the water and waste industry are

Desalination – Groundwater is often not enough to cover required supply so seawater desalination plays an increasingly important role

Transport – The pipeline transportation of water.

Water Treatment – The purification of groundwater and surface water

Water Pump Station – Delivering water and feeding it into the drinking water network

Water Supply Network – Ensuring the supply of clean water.

Sewer Network – Ensuring that waste water is reliably disposed of.

Wastewater Pump Station  Pumping wastewater via the sewage network to the treatment plants

Wastewater Treatment – Plants for improving the water quality of our lakes, rivers and oceans.
