Socket Weld Flanges

We use socket weld flanges as an attachment, primarily to connect pieces of piping together.

Also known as a counterbore flange, this type of flange is primarily used as a practical pipe connector that has an opening in the middle that allows you to connect it to another pipe.

The bolts on the flange’s outer rim enable you to tighten the connection as required to prevent fluid or gases from escaping.

Suitable for numerous applications, you will primarily find socket weld flanges used in plumbing and gas lines.

In this post, we look at what is a socket weld flange, the benefits it can provide, and its suitability in various applications.

Socket Weld Flanges Explained

Socket weld flanges explained

The purpose of socket weld flanges is to provide a robust barrier between two surfaces where they come together, preventing one pipe end from being pushed directly into another, leaving a small space for liquids and gases to escape.

Designed for small pipe size operations, ring type joints are essential in preventing leaks and connecting pipes. Flanges such as socket weld flanges, therefore, become a vital component in achieving the tight seal required.

Makeup of a socket weld flange

Like other ring-type joint flanges, socket weld flanges have a notched face that makes them easy to install alongside gaskets and o rings and, as such, can provide an even more secure connection.

Helping to make plumbing and piping systems continuous, socket weld flanges are designed to join pieces of pipe together using a threaded, welded connection.

Offering superior flow properties, these RTJS flanges work with a number of piping options, making it suitable for almost any application.

Advantages of socket weld flanges

Socket weld flanges:

  • Are suitable for both high- and low-pressure applications – making them ideal across a wide range of industries
  • Can withstand higher pressures compared to other ring-type joints (a cost-effective option when we think about longevity, maintenance, and replacement)
  • Are more suitable when gas or liquid is being transferred through piping systems – making them safe for continued use.
  • Bolts are tightened on both sides of the flange. You have peace of mind a secure connection can be achieved (and you also don’t need a lot of bolts)
  • Require a quick installation process – great when you’re pushed for time or need a solution fast
  • Provide an airtight connection – this makes them the preferred choice in several gas and liquid piping applications
  • Offer superb flow rates as their composition includes a smooth bore transition from the pipe to the flange
  • Can fit into tight spaces even when flange weld is proving challenging
  • Are welded to the pipe end, providing stability and strength (chosen over a threaded flange as socket weld flanges are proven better to prevent leaks)
  • Require no bevelling before welding, generating efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Can withstand vibration, pressure, and temperature fluctuations.

Ring Type Joints

The socket weld flange is a flange that requires welding (unlike slip-on flanges (that are also not as resistant to high pressure)) in order to attach them correctly and securely to applications.

Of course, there are various flanges suitable for different applications, all suitable for varying piping systems.

To achieve a proper fit, socket weld flanges require precision machined ends that match the stated dimensions.

The flange attaches to the pipe when it is inserted into the recessed flange area and then welded into place.

Its unique design features a round plate with bolt holes and a raised neck, including a socket or cavity that fits onto the pipe.

These types of flanges are fabricated from various materials meeting the specific requirements of the application they are intended for.

Materials can include:

  • Carbon steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Nickel
  • Titanium.

The material type you opt for will depend on the application’s temperature and pressure conditions.

You should also take into account the importance of corrosion resistance, erosion, and potential environmental factors.
